Cuenca Los Ojos

Cuenca Los Ojos

Cuenca de los Ojos, also known as the “Basin of Springs,” is a protected area of more than 49,000 hectares located in the Sky Islands of Sonora, right along the border between Mexico and the United States. This remarkable landscape preserves a unique combination of desert wetlands, expansive grasslands, and mountains that are part of the Madrean Archipelago.
At Cuenca de los Ojos, efforts are focused on restoring former ranchlands that had become degraded over time. Through the recovery of streams and springs, and by strengthening natural processes such as herbivory, predation, pollination, natural fire regimes, carbon sequestration, and nutrient cycling, the ecosystem is gradually regaining its natural balance.
Thanks to these restoration efforts, the region has once again become a refuge for iconic and threatened species such as the jaguar, ocelot, black bear, and beaver, as well as a rich diversity of native plants and wildlife.
